The Gifts She Gave Me

                       Arly Parent

   3/15
I got a gift today
she smiled at me
that sweet smile that makes your heart stop
because it says "I trust you"

9/24

I got a gift today

a quick kiss

almost absent-minded

the easy kiss of one who almost takes for granted that there will be many more to come

the kiss of one who's sure

10/30

I got a gift today

today she just slept

head on my chest

and traded heartbeats with me

mine for hers

hers for mine

two rhythmic still spots each listening,

focusing,

and being responsible,

to

on

for

the other

7/08

I got a gift

and it's easy enough to see

that today she decided

to spend her life with me

we traded rings of warm, rose gold

traded vows, and words, and smiles, and friends, and families--

gave hands

to have

and to hold

I got a gift today

There's nothing about me. I play with pauses as well as silence. I write words, assign meanings and junk, and play with a language that might be as much my own as another. I don't know. more..
