TRUTH

TRUTH

A Poem by Larry Johnson

I’m not going to sit up hear and lie and put up a false pretense I’m not even going to tell you some tripped out story to puff myself up to make me look good, but what I am going to do is hit you with that cold hard truth. You see the truth is when I saw you standing over there talking to my cousins all decked out like Sunday dinner at big mamas house I felt like I was ten years old out back in the shed with grandpa hell I knew I was whipped. The truth is when I saw her at the alter in that gown it was as if the heavens had opened up there gates and shined all there glory on me. The truth is I thought what we had would last but I guess if they can cast angels out of the heavens why not me.

The truth is when I first met her I saw her for what she was so I wouldn’t let up but like a serpent she just crept right in leading me into this life of sin like a game of dice not knowing whether I would lose or win. Up against her vices I was like a feather blowing in the wind soaring to new heights but knowing eventually it had to end. The truth is when she finally did find out I think I was more upset than her how the hell you gonna just up and leave? how the hell you gonna run off with my kids? bringing this dream to an end like a dagger through the chest bringing my heart to an end.

Truthfully wasn’t I a man didn’t I take care of our kids didn’t I put a roof over your heads didn’t I take care of my business . Hell I didn’t love her It was just lust this isn’t about her this is about us, you see the truth of the mater is I had a good woman I had a good life I had a good thing but without trust and honesty truthfully I guess It wasn’t bound to last.
