Sleep MotherA Poem by mikedutyThis poem was inspired by the idea of the fall and winter seasons being a time of rest for Mother Nature.Sleep Mother Your day is through You have labored long in the heat now, Sleep Mother Pull your iridescent blanket up over your barren hills While the lights are dimmed and the dusk is cool Sleep, Mother to rise again early in spring and start your labors anew When you will rise with the chirping of young birds and the birth of new flowers When the sun is far below its zenith and night is in its full bloom of darkness Fall deep into your slumber while the thick, white blanket
is pulled up Over barren hills Winter is no death Merely slumber I’ll wait patiently, stoking wood fires, waiting for you to rise again and feed summer’s sweltering furnace I’ll retreat from the cold and damp with my chili and lose
myself in a book or so while you slumber and I wonder when you sleep, like me, do you dream Do you dream of marigolds and hummingbirds? Or the crack of the bat and children giggling as they splash in pools Do you dream of the music of outdoor concerts? Or prefer your own songs of birds and wind and thunder and lightning? Of what do you dream when you sleep Mother? © 2012 mikedutyFeatured Review
