CourageA Poem by Mike DefreitasFinding the Courage to act
Astonishment; the wildest self discovery
What are the limits of man? Disease of the mind, is it Disease of the body? Yet the mind and the body Two things; separate Yet united as one The mind uses knowledge to effects it ends An end I need to find; the one before me Is mediated by knowledge How can knowledge, used by the mind All of us a sudden master the physical? My Vagal circuit is broken The nucleus ambiguus, shut down Trauma is in my nerves Immured in my body Bullying from so long ago Bullying, whose memory I hardly remember My mind went on, or off On, it lived in dissociation And off, it no longer lived The feeling, how can one describe trauma? Unless you've experienced it, the term doesn't apply To regular emotional difficulties My lord, astonishment at the distance From a healthy adapted mind I feel such a profound sense of compassion An intense. unquenchable love For the self who has suffered Recovery is in sight But in the way lies feats Fears lurk before me And the shadows they produce confound the mind I know what I need to do I feel compelled by some ineffable feeling A maturity, a wisdom, from deep within It utters to me: have courage © 2013 Mike Defreitas |
