Just a Dream

Just a Dream

A Poem by Michael

The darkness of the smoke

Clouds my vision

My team members

Let there be no division

As the fire rages

And the flames do roar

Help me find the person

On the other side of this door

Swiftly we move

Snaking our way through

I can hear her screaming

Do you hear it too

The screaming of a woman

In pain and in fear

Trapped under a beam

I can see her clear

I rush up to her

And stand right by her side

My team starts to set her free

I tell her it's not the day to die

Then we hear a popping

A crackling that's real loud

No one seen it coming

The house crumbles down

Right on top of me

And it buries my team

I feel the sweat rolling

And realize it was just a dream.

Just a dream, yes (or nightmare), but something very real to firefighters.
