Can You Keep a Secret?

Can You Keep a Secret?

A Poem by Michael Howell

We tried

but the university is always

inside of me

and I'm falling through the fire

holding my broken heart in my hands

I tried excersizing self control

but you wouldn't have

any of that because

you found solace in another's arms

You're like a painter

in the way you use and abuse

but never let the paint dry

Now all I see is blue

but these walls are paperthin

You screamed at the top of your lungs

"PLEASE SCREAM AT THE TOP OF YOUR LUNGS-"

as you threw yourself into the snow

If I remember correctly

I laughed

But my mind loves to play tricks on me because

No one is ever content with the truth

I howled at the moon

but It didn't move

It drew razors over its arms and said

YOU DON'T LOVE ME

words once expressed from the mouth

of every princess and king

It's strange to think

that I could have been so numb in a place

I used to call home

and as you watched my every move

I can't help but ask myself

Where did you go

When you knew you didn't

love me?

Now all I can do

is stare through the blinds in your

bedroom and

watch the sun traces lines across the glass.

Isn't it fitting?

The sun doesn't leave a trace either.
