Her Hopeful Vision

Her Hopeful Vision

A Poem by Mike Espinosa
"

Based on “A Dream of Her Grandfather” by Zitkala-Sa.

"

A gift from her grandfather,

a medicine man.

No shared language between the two.

Her dreams are visions.

A cedar chest addressed to her

sitting in her house.

The durable chest:

a heavy lid,

a light gift,

a heavy meaning.

A picture:

an Indian camp

suspended in thin air.

No paint or writing

could capture it.

Tepees grew out of the chest,

happy Indians exited and visited.

Dakota chants rang through the room.

She understood them.

Hope filled her-

hope for her people.A gift from her grandfather,

a medicine man.

No shared language between the two.

Her dreams are visions.

A cedar chest addressed to her

sitting in her house.

The durable chest:

a heavy lid,

a light gift,

a heavy meaning.

A picture:

an Indian camp

suspended in thin air.

No paint or writing

could capture it.

Tepees grew out of the chest,

happy Indians exited and visited.

Dakota chants rang through the room.

She understood them.

Hope filled her-

hope for her people.

I like the fluidity in your words..and how they capture a feeling of nostalgia well.
