Fantasy Turned RealA Poem by MichaelaAfter watching Mermaids: The Body Found, I had to write this.
Your large eyes stare at me,
As I stare back at you. A fine kept secret, A fantasy that is true. Do you know what I am? I am not one of you, But I will not hurt you I won't give any clues. You reach out your hand, And I reach out mine, A mystery unsolved, An animal so fine. Our hands are the same, Yet different in many ways, Your fingers are webbed, Wrinkly from water days. You are afraid, but so am I, Secrets you have So for you I will lie. To you I owe my life, For I have not drowned, Dead I would be If you I had not found. As a boat comes along, I know you must leave, But promise me this: You'll remember me. The dolphins swim near, Calling you away, I let go of your hand, I'll forever remember this day. For one last moment you can stay, Spirits sink and our eyes drift away. You seem to think of something, There is something you want to say. But away you swim, You leave me alone. Sinking fast, And chilled to the bone. A splash sounds nearby, And I look around, You are back... In your hand something profound. You grab my hand and place it there, A spear of a beautiful spike, I don't know how to thank you, I don't know what you like. Then it hits me, And before you swim away, I cut the bracelet off my leg, With its smooth charms of clay. I tie the bracelet around your wrist, Your face anew with awe, The little dolphin charms, Beautiful, without a flaw. The boat comes ever nearer, And you turn away to leave, Tears trickle down my face, To you I want to cleave. I watch you swim away, A mystery I finally solved, A secret to be kept, Nothing left unsolved. A spear from a mermaid... Simply full of appeal, I grasp it to my chest, A fantasy turned real.
