I Promise

I Promise

A Poem by A

Life
What a waste of time so precious
I lay with him
Casting muffled shadow creatures onto the ceiling
We frequently converse about life
Such a silly concept
He knows everything
He knows most things
He knows nothing
I know nothing
I'm afraid
Here comes the thoughts of mortality
Of innocent lives ripped away from mortal shells
Of heaven and hell
Of eternity, forever, indefinite time
Of nonexistence
My shadows waiver
He grasps my hand
I bury myself in him
"I'm scared of death"
I plead softly
He lifts my chin
Looking in my watering eyes
"It'll be okay
I'll be with you forever
I'll hold you forever"
Tears streak my cheeks for the first time since the news
The news I have sheltered from even myself
The news I must now accept
"No you won't"
A single drop falls from his beautiful birthmarked eye
He didn't expect that
More is to come that he'll never expect
He wholeheartedly
Yet blindly
Utters
"I promise"

That was the moment I broke
My funeral was the one where he did
