SummertimeA Poem by A
The sun settled into the sky
Pushing the darkness aside Forcing it to cast its shadows upon another civilization It was bound to lurk it’s way in for a few hours tonight But the blanket of the sun covered the earth for today And nobody cared to see past that point when the sun could no longer hold it position The innocent, sunblock covered, waterlogged children danced through the leaves They emptied rocks from their mud stained shoes The laces ratted and holes worn through the soles The tan women baked Their only care being their skin Yet, coincidentally, the doctors would say that wasn’t a care for them at all But they were content No children existed, no work, just them and the sun They enjoyed closing their eyes to be washed away in the glow The sweaty athletes competed With footballs, frisbees, volleyballs, and baseball caps in tow, they went at it While competition is tiring and meaningless for some, the sport of it is built into the blood of others The summertime keeps them outdoors It opens the courts and spirits of the athletes, young and old, to compete The summer sun shone down through the crowds It pushed its way through windows and doors It’s rays didn’t stop until they touched each person’s mind Placing there, a hint of happiness for the day to come -A © 2016 A |
