Steps Beside Me

Steps Beside Me

A Poem by Mitch
"

If you put a gun to my head I honestly don't know if I could tell you exactly what I meant by this poem. But that's also the point of art I think. Words don't mean anything by themselves, we give it

"

I walk the path, no steps beside me

The cold creeps in

The fog lurks

Heavy bones lighten with breathes of crisp air

I walk the path, no steps beside me

The days are shorter

Food is warmer

Coffee more comforting

A breeze rustles the ancient trees

A painting of colors flys by

I walk the path, no steps beside me

Pockets stuffed with chilled hands

Pebbles bouncing underfoot

A voice speaks to me

I walk the path, no steps beside me

Crackling, Gruff, saged and with authority

You walk a lonely road

This is not my recomendation

There is plenty sand left to trickle

I walk the path, no steps beside me

My face contorts

My lips quiver

No answer to give

I walk the path, no steps beside me

There is heaviness in my bones

Grey in my hair

You could only imagine what i’ve seen

The places i’ve been

I walk the path, no steps beside me

Kings killed by their people

Peasants turned heros

Wars mounted

Lives created

Privy to them all

I walk the path, no steps beside me

Gods weeping

Angels broken

Devils laughing

Man burning

This is my authority

This is where I stake my claim

I walk the path, no steps beside me

Who are you to question fate?

To take control of matters above your station?

I walk the path, no steps beside me

Mouth opening and closing

Akin to a fish

A flick of a tongue

Wetted lips

Preparation for blasphemy

I walk the path, no steps beside me

Gritted teeth

Words pushed out

Clunky

Unwelcome

Scrunizated

I walk the path , no steps beside me

Tales of alienation

Pain

acceptance

Fall to demanding ears

I walk the path , no steps beside me

He listens

He nods

He walks

I walk the path, no steps beside me

A proposal left unsaid

Both sides understanding

Change painfully permanent

The reasoning unchanging

I walk the path, no steps beside me

He sighs

Heavy and deep

Damning and final

He stifles his pace

I walk the path, no steps beside me

Ugly tears

An enveloping hug

A wordless goodbye

A final breath

I’ve walked the path

No footsteps beside me
