RunningA Poem by MitchI've been running most of my life, from what I'm not entirely sure. Honestly I think many people are, we're all being chased. It's just that some us remain chased and some of us become the chasersYou run Thump thump You don’t know what from But you know it's coming Thump thump You hear it Or is that your own heart beating? It doesn’t matter You run Thump thump The fire dimming behind you The screams growing softer Copper still in your nose Still on your tongue You run Thump thump Images burned into your eyelids Projected eveytime you blink Blood soaked cobblestone Houses aflame You run Thump thump You hear the growling Thuds of heavy hooves Shouts of angry men Shadows of torches grow near You run Thump thump Words of prayer on your tongue in your head hymns are sung Begging, pleading No answer He leaves you hanging You run Thump thump An unseen branch Unlucky timing New wounds to stanch Unforgiving ground against a tired body You’ve ran Thumped thumped Your times up © 2024 MitchAuthor's Note
