SILENCE

SILENCE

A Poem by Hviske

NEVER FOUND SILENCE

NEVER FOUND PEACE

A VIBRATION

THERES LIKE THIS BUZZ

LIKE ELECRTICITY

ITS LOUD AND I CANT ESCAPE IT

IM LIKE A CHILD TRAPPED INSIDE A BURNING HOUSE

ALL I CAN DO IS SIT AND WATCH AND CRY AS THE FLAMES

CONSUME MY SUROUNDDINGS

I WANT SOME SILENCE

I NEED SOME SILENCE

BECAUSE IM ALL ALONE

AND YET THERES NOISE ALL AROUND ME

DEAFENNING NOISE

THE SOUND OF YOUR FOOTSTEPS ON THE BEDROOM FLOOR

THEY'RE STILL THERE

THE SOUND OF YOU BREATHING AS YOU SLEEP IN MY BED

IT'S STILL THERE

IN THE BATHROOM YOUR TAKING A SHOWER

I CAN HERE THE WATER FALLING ON YOUR SKIN

DROPS OF WATER FALLING ON THE FLOOR AS YOU STEP OUT OF THE SHOWER

I CAN HEAR ALL OF IT

ALL THE SOUNDS

BUT YOUR NOT HERE ANYMORE

BUT THE SOUND OF YOU STILL HAUNTS ME

AND I THINK I HEAR YOUR KEY UNLOCKING THE DOOR

BUT YOUR NOT THERE

I NEED SOME SILENCE

I NEED THE SOUNDS OF YOU TO DISAPPEAR

JUST LIKE YOU DID

Silence. A precious thing when you need it but something that can drive you mad when you need company and are lonely. Be careful what you wish for! Here, you wish for the sounds of a past relationship to go away - to cease being reminded of of it. Understandable but total forgetfulness is perhaps not the road to happiness. Fading memory perhaps better. 'Silence' is a lonely 'place'. On the other hand, there are times when we all long for silence; I do when awful 'music'/musak is howling away as I eat, and want to talk - Talk? but then - that wouldn't be silence, would it? Or when loud voices are assailing my ears and I just want to think, or hear good music, or relax. Often, it is the sounds you hear that offend, so you need to be in a place or, in company of your choice. Sadly the world has become a frenetic and cacophonous place. Silence is rare, as is now an environment of chosen sound; media and public address howl at us whenever they can. They haunt me as 'his sounds' seem to haunt the writer. They will go and maybe, some day someone will also decide that the world, the shopping mall, the supermarket, the restaurant, the pub don't need all surrounding, pervasive 'audio sludge' meanwhile, we all try to select non invaded environments and if the sounds are just in our heads, select the sounds we love to overplay them. A fine poem which raises many issues well worth thinking about. Why not write a poem extolling beautiful sounds that give you pleasure and think deeply about them. Why not write one that combines sounds with colours, or music with feelings - happy feelings and I think you could do that very well.

You are such a good writer ! This is a mix of sad and tragic. I know what it's like to feel someone 's absence, the noise created by the absolute silence of him not being where he should be. Do you truly mean the final three lines? Not sure that you do. 'BUT THE SOUND OF YOU STILL HAUNTS ME'

Take care.

Interesting way to put it, but yeah, sometimes silence can be the loudest thing ever.
