Fly Away Chickadee

Fly Away Chickadee

A Poem by Michelle Gent
"

My daughters first day of kindergarten (my only child)

"
Fly Away Chickadee-

My baby left for school today
So excited to be going
on the big yellow school bus
So bittersweet for me

She was elated
I had tears in my eyes
I was trying to hide
Letting go of my baby
for the very first time

She smiled from ear to ear
As the bus pulled away
Bouncing from seat to seat
Like a pinball machine
Never giving a second glance back

Diapers, potty training, starting school
It was all a part of the plan
So why then was I so surprised?
Still it sprung up on me so suddenly

Now it's mommy's turn to be a big girl
I turn around and stare
at the empty house I have to enter alone
