CAT?

CAT?

A Poem by Michael Oliver
"

a brief contemplation on an incident I saw while travelling

"

                     The ennui of travel

      Blur of green verges

                      And over the bridge

      no trains to watch

                      A constant of verges

       Ignored in the  passage

                      Wait stop  this world

     Apply the internal brake

                      Was that orange a

    A smear of definition

                      The woman bows over

    Clutching a Sainsbury’s bag

 Such is our condition

       We catch Plato’s shadow

                         And purpose the guise

        In light of questions

                         Of the confused shadow

        This air was saddened

                      Verges are not stopped

    House after house after

                      Trees and we pass

   Hedges and the people

                       Life resumed its ignoring

   but ennui was startled

I so love the word, "ennui." It just has such a pretty sound to it when spoken. This poem makes me think of how often God shows Himself to us … in the fragrance of a flower, in the feel of a soft, caressing breeze, in the molten gold of the sun sparkling on the surface of the river, in the sound of crows cawing in the yard. We take for granted what is so easily received, walking through our days hardly noticing things that we never have to think about. It reminds me of the quote, "Once you carry your own water, you will learn the value of every drop." Very nicely penned.

I like capturing the world in various mediums for a long time I was a painter, but more recently I realize the same imperative can be used to direct words as well as brushes. more..
