Four Strophes from an AutumnA Poem by Michael Oliver
The 'chairities' outside church are empty
An apathy of everywhere Novembers indecision Passing - pub's lunchtime - dark - interior movements Passing curiosity a perception quested - unfound Beyond the flats - pale trees - fade Brickwork at a loss of hues One green - one bush - so evergreen Triumphs against the plague of jaundice Forgot her name - oh - 'Kay!' approaches With all red gums and teeth Gone to phantoms our once fulcrum All - now - 'honey' in colonial English The straggle of hang - a willow - curtain The apologies - ducks - seek some reflection The ripples - break - fragment - liquify - sky A stretching reveals - splits - clouds - blue
