There are many scents
that get my attention,
and bring back memories...
good memories.
My father's leather chair.
The roses along my fence.
Strawberries and oranges...
cantaloupe and watermelon...
and freshly mowed grass.
The coffee I bring to you each morning.
A summer rain coming in on the breeze.
Holiday cookies being baked with care.
Homemade rolls, and soup in a large pot.
The smell of your hair.
Laundry fresh off the line.
(Clothes out of the dryer aren't bad...
but they can't compare to the fresh smell from outside.)
Anything that came out
of my grandmother's kitchen.
Fresh mint...
spearmint, and bubblegum.
Fresh peaches and apple blossoms.
A newborn after a bath.
The cedar closest.
A steak on the grille...
even hot dogs smell good then.
Fried onions make a kitchen
a fabulous place to be.
Cotton candy and candied apples...
and all the smells
when the circus comes to town.
Walking past any bakery...
or stopping in for fresh dough nuts.
Pizza...
and popcorn...
and hot chocolate by the fire.
The dark tanning lotion that turns
you to bronze.
The clear, clean air
on top of the mountain...
and the sea mist
along the ocean's shore.
I could do without many things
in my life;
but, I don't think
I want to ever lose those scents.
So many...
remind me of you.
