Sonnet 3

Sonnet 3

A Poem by Lorelei Middlesex
"

Our hearts when too afraid of chaos are doomed to never love at all.

"

If I were to compare a human’s heart

To something, I would hold in my mind’s eye

A hapless sea. This is how I would start:

Strays there and back and howls a lullaby,

Our mighty heart beats channels like the sea

As it falls apart, reforms, dying then

Living then loving everything it sees

In awful sequence doomed to lives of men.

And yet if there were one thing I would say

To quell the bare space that love occupies,

I say I’d rather cry than twist away

From love, to feel love’s ache before I die.

Our hearts, like seas, when too afraid of harm,

Don’t reach the love that strikes like thunderstorms.

I had a little trouble with the last two lines, but I think it quite cute, if a little awkward and funny.
