Un-Christian PeopleA Poem by MiagAn insiders look...
You
say you love your neighbor but barely know their name
Always claiming to be in the likeness of Him but for that you should be ashamed Pretending to welcome all but only a few truly fit your mold Thank goodness that you don’t have a say in who sees the streets paved in gold You love to quote scripture as if knowing the Word makes you cleaner than others When all the while you use it to pass judgment and shame on your brother So very easy to dismiss the suffering and concerns of those around you But ready to let everyone know you’re thinking of them as long as it doesn’t require too much actual effort from you It’s funny how easy it is to say your praying for them and wish you could do more But when the opportunity presents itself you run for the nearest door Relieved to have freed yourself from the messiness and inconvenience they create It’s so easy to add someone to your never-ending prayer list But Christian people what happens after you say “Amen” If you were sincerely concerned couldn’t you simply ask if there’s anything you could do Or dare I suggest picking up the phone so they know they’re not alone and forgotten by you Instead of dodging their calls and avoiding their eyes out of fear of them asking for something from you Or instead of sitting around gossiping about their struggles maybe lend them a hand of help Or maybe instead of not shaming someone because they don’t come to church anymore Consider helping them get there or anywhere else they need to go How do you start this radical transformation you ask? How about looking within the walls for your brothers and sisters in need Instead of pretending the suffering is only in those outside the Body Maybe imaging it’s your family struggling for their next meal Or your loved one fighting for their life Or your spouse that lost their job and the electric company just cut off your lights Instead of writing them off as not living up to your standards Remember that in this world you too could be only minutes away from disaster How about being more like Christ in more than just a name Look at how he loved everyone and gave Himself to those in need with making them feel ashamed He did it out of love and true concern for our people He didn’t wait for a photo op or stand around gossiping about them under the steeple Instead of forming cliques, judging , overanalyzing and underreacting Why not put your faith in action and love as He does © 2012 Miag |
