Georgina was the glass, and she was about to fall.![]() “Three minutes.” A seventeen year old Georgina Barrett murmured to herself, resting the still neutral pregnancy test on a tissue, before setting it on the counter. After quickly washing her hands, the brunette leaned her hands on the counter, gripping the edge tightly. She took deep breaths, trying to reassure herself that everything was going to be okay. But it’s not, the voice in her head whispered, and as much as she didn’t want to think it, Georgina knew that voice was right. Her junior year hadn’t been the best. Sure, it had been fun. If destroying her family was considered fun. In the spring, Georgina had decided that the medical field wasn’t for her. Granted, her family didn’t take the news well, she still decided that a career as an author would be much more pleasing. Her parents rolled her eyes, telling her she was ridiculous. A career in the literary arts wasn’t concrete, it wasn’t stable. It was no way for the youngest child of a wealthy family to make a living " not that she’d ever have to rely on her own salary. Nonetheless, her parents didn’t approve. But the sixteen year old was determined. Her parents were furious " and that was an understatement. She spent most of the summer with her boyfriend, Roger. Roger was everything she could have ever dreamed of in a boy " and more. He was a year older than her, and they’d been dating since the past September. He was going to be a businessman, and Roger was amazing when it came to things like that. It was one of his gifts. Not to mention he was one of the nicest guys she’d ever met, and was practically a god in Georgina’s eyes. Her undeniable love for him caused her to see past any faults, and she couldn’t think of anyone more perfect. But especially after that summer, her parents didn’t approve of Roger, and refused to ever let Georgina bring him home. After more than a year, they’d never even met him. With two minutes to go, she recounted the party in her mind. It was a regular party, thrown in the Business dorm. She was drinking, which was normal, but for some reason, she’d had a bit more to drink than usual. And as Roger pulled her away two hours into the party, she wasn’t going to object. He took her into his dorm, which wasn’t a new place for Georgina. But there was something different about this time. The kissing, the touching, it was all more…intense. The brunette could feel it going somewhere, and as he laid her down on the bed, she realized that she had no clue how to stop it. Before she could even process what was happening, both of their shirts were on the ground, and Roger’s hands were tracing on and below the waistband of her jeans. She knew that as his mouth kissed her neck, they would be off soon enough. “Roger.” Georgina finally let out, taking a deep breath. “I can’t go any further.” His eyes met hers, looking huskily over her exposed body. Gina tried to breathe steadily, but the truth was that she had never felt more vulnerable in her life. She was nervous and scared, this was so much worse than anything that had ever gone down with her parents. This was…real. She didn’t have a clue what to do, and Roger had the advantage over her. “C’mon, love.” He whispered in her ear, his hand tracing along the skin of her exposed stomach, sending shivers up her spine. “Nothing bad is going to happen. You can’t say no to me now. We’ve come this far.” Georgina blamed the alcohol, but in reality, it was her love for Roger. He was right " she couldn’t say no to him. And in that moment especially, it was one of her fatal flaws. With one minute to go, she compared the situation to glass. You can treat glass gently and with caution, and it can stay intact through almost anything. But if any one time the glass drops, it breaks. For her whole life, Georgina had been sheltered and protected, like a piece of glass treated with care. But Roger came along, and he took her away from the comfort of her protection. And this situation was the breaking point. Georgina was the glass, and she was about to fall. And before she even knew what was happening, the glass was broken. The clock ticked, and the second hand hit the twelve. Practically jumping up, Georgina prayed that only one line would show, so that everything would be okay. She held her hands together, taking a steady breath and closing her eyes. She tried to reassure herself that it would be fine. When she could take the self motivation no longer, the seventeen year old looked at the test that she’d thought she’d never have to use until she was at least twenty three. Georgina blinked, but no matter how hard she wished it was a dream, two blue lines showed up very clearly on the stick. Ready or not, she was going to have a baby. © 2013 Mia |
