Broken Promise

Broken Promise

A Poem by mhylands

The time has come to say our goodbyes
Departing in different directions
I am sorry to break that promise
I can no longer justify what we had

Will you forgive me now it's over?
When I fail to ever remain sober?
Wrapped in a blanket of lies
Sent off to protect this guise

I had become so attached
Distancing myself to gain clarity
Tearing away was the hardest
Left me strained and slow to recover

This secret I take to the grave
As I can no longer be saved
Let us never cross paths again
For I will break in shame
