Drowning

Drowning

I knew I shouldn’t have stayed up late yesterday.

My eyelids feel like twin blocks of lead.
Tiredness courses through my veins.
Fatigue grips me from below
And tries to pull me under.

Feels like I’m drowning
As I struggle to keep my eyes open
I struggle to stay afloat
Can’t fall asleep
Or the shark will get me

And for a brief moment
I go under.
I resurface but I know I can’t last much longer.
I go under again.
As my eyes open again
I resurface for the last time.
And the cold, freezing water claims me...
And the shark moves in to kill...
“One more time you fall asleep in class, you are so going to detention!”

The only solace is falling asleep in class is safer than falling asleep while driving.
As a chronic insomniac, I have experienced many times like you depict. You use marvelous imagery to explain the feeling in a dramatic way.

I ought to sleep more, but I never do. Too stubborn. You've described the feeling quite well, and I must say: I wasn't expecting the ending.
