Recall

A Story by Chelle H
"

a woman is questioned by police after witnessing a murder

"

“It was him.”

“You’re sure?”

….

I remember it clearly, like a dream.

“The blood was everywhere, staining his skin as he hit and hit and…” I gasp for breath, forgetting to breathe. Tears stream down my face as I reach out for something to steady myself. I look back up at the detective.

“Why would he do something like that? She was just trying to help him…” I’m shaking.

He sighs, making eye contact. “Monsters like him rarely have a reason. Don’t worry, he’ll rot in jail for this. I promise you that.”

I finally smile. “Thank you so much. At least she can rest in peace knowing her killer is caught.”

“You’ll testify in court? I know this has been hard for you, but it would really help me keep that promise.”

“Oh, right. Very hard, but don’t worry, I’ll testify if that’s what you need. He’s a crazy man.”

He laughs. I tilt my head. “Here’s my card. We’ll call you if we need anything else. Rodrick here will escort you home. Thank you for your time, Miss Bonnett.”

Rodrick says hello. I start walking. I’ve just witnessed a murder, I don’t care about greetings. He understands.

The cops keep talking behind me.

“B*****d hit her when she wasn’t looking. He could’ve easily overpowered her, but he chose the coward’s route. And now he refuses to admit he did it. Guy was caught red handed, and still swears on his life it wasn’t him. Guess it really will cost him.” The cops chuckle, fading into the background.

Idiots.

Cry, lose breath, stumble, cry some more. Shake like you’re in an earthquake, smile pretty like they’re God itself.

Oh, but they’re claiming it was you- who me? I have pouty eyes and rivers down my cheeks, it can’t be me. You’re right, an innocent little thing like you could never. Here’s my card in case you need me again, only for official police business like information or maybe even comfort? Only if you want to…

I walk into my apartment, locking the door and pulling off my shoes. As I take off my jacket, I pull the card from my pocket and toss it into the drawer. It’s getting pretty full, I should empty it soon.
