The Halloween Road

The Halloween Road

A Poem by Michael
"

Just something for the day

"

The road was wet and full of wild
as nighttime crept and took the sky.
So long ago I was a child

to young to care or reason why.

My mom had said to mind the time
as dark that night would sure come fast,
but off I went to play and climb
and lost all track as day marched passed.

The darkly woods held craggy views
next to the well-worn path I trod.
A study made in blue-gray hues
covered the limbs, the rocks, the sod.

Just what was there I cannot say
for to the road I kept my feet,
but noise arose where night met day
a beastly low grumbling beat.

Just time before, 'bout half day's span
'twas a most happy place to be.
The birds, the sun both with me ran
upon the path down to the sea.

But day was lost along that route
so darkened by the dim of night.
Courage was gone and soon I'd shout
at ghostly things that gave a fright.

So run I did with foot of wing
lightning fast - as ever I'd go.
To make it home, it was the thing
home safe from fear I came to know.

Yes! There it was upon the porch
the glow of a heavenly light.
I fled the woods straight to the torch
home safe to start Halloween's night.

That night I stayed to tend the dole
as ghosts and ghouls did ring the bell,
candy and luck, it was their goal
why they'd tempt a witching night's spell.

I'd had my fill, was brave no more
costume or mask I would not wear.
My pride was bruised, yes -it was sore
I'd had my fill of being scared.

For me, that time it was enough
to sit by the Autumn night's fire,
I left to others to be so tough
and temp the devil's own desire.
