Love and Fear

Love and Fear

A Poem by Michael

Two emotions are all we have
to guide us though our life
Two impressions of how things are
no matter what our strife

The first is fear and strong it is
for fear can blind the soul
that moment in time when it calls
it twists and takes control

The other's love and stronger still
nothing can take its place
for love is truth within the soul
our share of godly grace

A newborn cries in to the world
a statement made from fear
It cries alone but soon will ease -
a mother's voice to hear

For a mother's bliss shows us best
the strength love holds within
it conquers fear in whispered sounds
when a life does begin

That day of days a child knows love
yet a mother finds fear
worried of things to harm her child
and clings and holds it near

Hate and joy we surely feel
but not deep at our core
They are just things that we have learned
since that day we were bore

We wrongly name the things we feel
emotions in a group
as if they held an equal strength
like stuff within a soup

Truth is all the others derive
from two we really hold
They make us human as we learn
hate just can't be that bold

So think of things you truly love
their loss will show you fear
from love and fear true value comes
to all we hold so dear

Typo..last grouping I think you meant..you and not your..This is beautuiful and full of meaning..I would have went with something without the soup line those as it brings it down to fast to a reality that the others seem not to have as they are so emotion filled..Never the less..great I loved it..God bless..Valentine

This is a thing of beauty and lends a simple understanding to such a complicated life as we lead. Ilove the part that says "We wrongly name the things we feel." hate is almost always thought of as the opposite of love when the fact is the opposite of both is indifferance. Great write.

A beautiful write on Love and Fear, Michael. A lot of truth right here. You captured the essence of fear when you said that it blinds the soul, twists and takes control...

I love this portion about love: it conquers fear in whispered sounds...It is said that "Love conquers all!" I definitely believe that "love" has the ability to change out world. There is no force on the face of this earth that bears that strength and ability to transform the human race!

I also like this: We wrongly name the things we feel
emotions in a group
as if they held an equal strength
like stuff within a soup

It is so easy to not know exactly what we are feeling and to name it something it is not.

Your poem flows nicely and has a nice ring to it. So thankful to Kathie (Valentine) for sharing it with me!

Well done! :-) Carole

True, the only two emotions and actions are from love or fear....Jealousy and hate, envy...all are fears.
Compassion for others, forgiveness, come from love. The strongest person is the one who can take hold of their emotions and come from love, not reacting from fear. Hard to do yes, but when you truly walk that path, you are an enlightened person. Thanks for sharing this much enjoyed your poem.

I like this Michael..
you flow and rhyme quite well
throughout.

Yes, I think it's fairly accurate
to say love and fear are the two
controlling emotions. Fear is the
basis of all negative emotion and
love... well, is love. Promotes peace,
harmony.. feelings of joy. I think often
the hurtful feelings associated with love
don't derive from love itself,
but from fear once again...
the fear of losing that love.

Thank you for sharing your talent Michael!
Well done...!

I really liked this poem and enjoyed the read. I didn't like the "soup" line too much tho.
