Memorial Day

Memorial Day

A Poem by Michael
"

We need to take a moment to remember

"

Be it Southern widow's pride
or the stroke of Logan's pen
the truth of it matters naught
the deeds - the fight - the daring
all sacrifice remembered

Lincoln's "last full measure" paid
they are "the better angles"
no justice paid them with words
The price always understood
Remember what this day's for

The brave, sacred few who gave
their very bones are our brick -
their precious blood our mortar
binding this nation as one
They gave to us and gave all

With bowed head I pray for them
to forever gently rest
and know we hold to the gift
This land's free by lives spent so
forget that not, not this day!

Michael
The origin of Memorial day is in question. That is what the reference to southern widows and General Logan refers to.

First of all, a worthy topic, and delivered cleanly without over-dramatizing or becoming preachy.
The punctuation in the first line... All of the other stanzas have end punctuation, but this does not. There also seems to be a need for pause between naught and deeds, because they seem to run together when one reads.
In the second stanza, did you mean to put a period before The price? Yet that would make a fragment. So maybe just get rid of the capital T in the?
The last stanza also read a little awkwardly for some reason. I think it is this line that throws me off: and know we hold to the gift. These are the only things I see.
Like all of your work, your voice is clear and reverent. I enjoyed this. :)
