Ignorance and Understanding

Ignorance and Understanding

A Poem by Kirsty Anne

The ignorant man
And the understanding man.

One sees a grumpy child,
Dressed all in black,
Hair covering his face,
Angry, aggressive, rude.

And he will avoid him.

The other sees a child,
Dressed all in black,
Hair covering his face.

And he will not avoid him,
For his mother always told him
Never to judge a book by its cover.

The ignorant man
Sees an unsociable girl
Slouched, crying in the corner
Being avoided by everyone.

And he will avoid her too.

The understanding man
Will see a girl
Crying in the corner
With nobody beside her.

And he will not avoid her,
For his father always told him
That sometimes people just need someone to talk to.

The ignorant man leaves
With judgements of two people
He has never met.

The understanding man leaves
With an open mind
And two new friends.
