Chapter 3 - Scars and StitchesA Chapter by Kirsty Anne
A few days later, there is a hole in both walls. Daphne is asleep, but Hamish is still here for me to talk to.
"Ach..." "What is it?" "My face...it's stinging like a motherf**ker..." "Let me see...they might have stitched it wrongly..." "Rosanne, I don't want to frighten you..." "You think it'll frighten me? Come on, it can't be worse than Thomas'..." "Ugh...alright, just don't touch it." "I won't." I say as calmly as I can. With a sigh, he lowers himself down to his knees and lets me see his face. "Oh..." His forehead and cheek had both been slashed open and sewn back carelessly. His eyes, bloodshot and wrinkled, were stained with the blood. "Rosanne..." "Hamish, it's okay...they sewing has been done pretty recklessly, but it's not going to get infected, at least as far as I can see. Are your eyes okay?" "Yeah...they're stinging, but I can see." "I wish there was something I could do...would Mavis be of more use? I think she used to be a nurse..." "She did...but I'm not sure I could drill through...I'm not sure my vision is up to it." "Huh...it's worth a shot. I'll pass you the pole, just give me a second." "Are you sure? Is it going to be strong enough?" "Yeah, I got through both walls with it, and Daphne managed to get through to cell 59." "Wait, Justin's cell?" "I think so..." "Doesn't Justin have painkillers?" I hit my head off the wall. "I'm an idiot." "Daphne?" "...huh..." "I need your help..." She yawns as she sits up, looking through the hole in the wall and tilting her head to the side. "Hey, I bet I can widen that hole..." "Maybe later, do you know of Justin still has painkillers?" "I'll check..." She shuffles over to the other side of the cell. "Dude, you got painkillers?" "Uh...let me see..." I can hear the rattling of bottles in his cell from here. The guards know he's suicidal, and they give him tonnes of medications in the hope that he'll overdose and kill himself. After all, it means one less mouth to feed. Justin never takes them. He vowed to God that he would be clean of drugs. "Uh...yeah, ibuprofen. How many do you need?" "It's for Hamish." "Wait, Rosanne got through to Hamish too?" "Yeah, she's a smart one." "Hey, good on you, honey!" I smile in response. "Hey, here you go. Pass them through." "Thanks Justin." Daphne crawls over again and hands me the pills, which I pass to Hamish. "Thank you..." He gulps down two and leans against the wall. "I'll be okay." "Good..." I turn back to Daphne. "Pass me the pole, I'm gonna widen the hole." "What? How are you going to hide it?" "They won't see it, trust me." "Uh...okay." I pass it through the hole, excited by the possibility of human contact, for the first time in a year.
