One Way Window
A Poem by mermaidgirl
This is a piece I wrote about the feeling when you're in a room full of people, but you feel like you're watching everyone through a window. You feel like no one see's you, and you'll never belong.
Looking through a one-way window,Waving through the glassWatching people smiling, laughingWaiting for them to passKnocking on the solid pane,Wondering why they can't seeThey're entwined within their perfect worldAnd your window isn't cleanThey've been here all their livesTo them, you'll never belongWhy bother cracking the window,When they've hated you all alongYou know you'll never enter,But still, you always standOutside of the one-way window,The glass up against your handPraying the window will crack,Someone will admit you withinBut they draw the curtains swiftly,And you're alone in the dark once again

I remember back in the day when I was a teenager in the late 70's and early 80's. I would feel exactly how you described in this poem. As if I lived on the outside looking in. Like a ghost that no one knew existed in their midst. Teenage years are difficult because not only is the body growing and changing but so is the mind. All the emotions are surging within and more heightened than normal. When you feel sad it is a deep profound sadness and when you feel love it's a euphoric intensely powerful love. It feels like your the only one that is experiencing this and no one could ever understand how you feel. But that's not always the truth. I wish I could have opened up myself more to friendship. Taken the leap of faith and fought against my shyness to try and be more accepting of others into my world. If I had I would have been less lonely than and I would have never grown to find comfort in the loneliness. I am an old man now and I see a lot of myself in your sad poem. I would never ever want anyone to find comfort in being alone. That is not living. Thank you for sharing your poem with us.
