Madhouse Madrigals

Madhouse Madrigals

A Poem by Mia Sparrow

ANCORA

in tunnels below

madmen file as a privilege

dining at its best

POMONA

when you watch yourself

walking into those white walls

the meds are working

EAST ORANGE

chained to a gurney

no room at the inn tonight

profanities fly

BELLEVUE

in twenty-two west

the criminals are insane

my friendly neighbor

WHERE THEN

observed one on one

some think it's suicide watch

dancing's not allowed

SAD-GLAD

relatives come out

ecstatic to see you mad

wishes do come true

RULES

smoke in the shower

tell them to smoke in your room

it was them, not you

QUOTIDIAN

karl wants to kill me

threw his coffee at my face

just another day

SLEEPWALKING

already four days

daytime somnambulism

closer to discharge

IT'S VELCRO

in four-point restraints

escape true to houdini

an eighty-pound shell
