you're your own favourite joke (and mine too)

you're your own favourite joke (and mine too)

A Poem by Em
"

it's funny how people don't realise how funny they are.

"
Your favourite joke
When I'm in earshot, anyway
Is that you were my second choice
Which I guess, by default, makes you second best.
It's funny, when you laugh at me because
The idea that you could ever be second best is laughable.
You are your own favourite joke
You're mine too.
Because you've watched three girls come and go.
The fourth is scared of you, scared of a non-existent us
And maybe she should be.
If there's anyone who could make or break the existent us,
it's you.
Second best, second choice you.
Second best at nothing but perhaps remembering to reply to emails.
Best at a lot of things
No one makes me feel so real as you
Like I'm someone to be taken seriously, to be considered a human being.
No one can keep up with a conversation with me for three hours
I've never met someone so knowing who I can still teach
Who still wants to learn.
So learn all you like, learn about the things that interest you.
Learn about the things that interest me by default
over long chats in uncomfortable chairs
(you'll laugh
i'll curse myself for forgetting how beautiful you can be when you do that)
Because people told me, before we met properly, for the first time
that you were gorgeous
the phrase 'sex bomb' was tossed around.
I expected that.
What I never expected was a challenge who never challenged me
The most incredible, exhilarating woman I ever met
Who was willing to think of herself as not winning.
(and i think this was the first time you hadn't won
i hope you remember the girl who beat you)

That... was... something. Sweet but sad. Arrogant but humble. A contradicting write... but pretty good at that.
