This poem puts into words the double-edged sword I feel like many young women face in their day to day lives. It take into account two extremes; one extreme is the girl who tries to be someone with their looks and vanity, while the other extreme is a more independent girl who might do the opposite of what society might like. The poem brings up good points on what each of these extremes feel like, and how they often times think that there is never "enough" they can do to to stand out, either to society or to, say, a boy they have taken a fancy to.
The juxtaposition of these two extremes, for example wearing too much makeup or no make up, shows how even though a girl might try to do something to stand out, each of these changes might not bring about total acceptance. There will always be someone who doesn't like the makeup, or someone who wishes the girl wore makeup. No matter what they do, not everyone is pleased. The poet continues this by also looking at speaking your opinions and intelligence and the effect it has on a girl's image. Some girls try to educate themselves and appear strong-willed and independent, yet they may get written off as a silly "feminist" or something else ridiculous. Society portrays beautiful women typically as not-that-intelligent, sadly, and the poet makes a point at how an educated woman comes off as "uptight" to some (but not all!). The poet also touches on the subject of speaking your mind, as previously mentioned. Some girls vehemently speak their mind on a variety of topics, but society traditionally tries to have a girl not speak their mind and "stay in their place." Obviously this causes conflicts as the poet points out.
Now what is the meaning of this poem? I can see two different ones. The poet might be using this poem as a cry to the world that women can never find happiness because society will never accept them, no matter what they may do. However, I prefer another meaning that I got. I see this poem as a cautionary tale to young girls that they will never find happiness if they try to "be enough" for society. Instead, I feel like the poet is trying to inspire young women to be their own person, regardless of what society deems is acceptable or not.
All in all, I enjoyed this poem. It offers a nice, concise critique on a part of society I personally feel needs changing. Women, nor anyone, should ever feel that they aren't "enough."

I'm so glad that you saw the point I was making about trying to encourage young women to be themselv.. read moreI'm so glad that you saw the point I was making about trying to encourage young women to be themselves, and to not listen to society as much as the media and culture around them is urging them to.
I appreciate the detailed review, as well.
