Gone

Gone

A Poem by Meghan Rose

Working wasn't hard for Evan.
The hours slipped by easily.
He'd stoop his head
And hunch his shoulders
Over the draft Lauren had handed to him
Five minutes ago.
Minutes turned to hours,
And soon, the morning was gone.

Time for lunch.
Lauren and David's chatter burbled
Right into Evan's ears and out again
Like wafting smoke.
Cars zoomed by the cafe.
He'd cross his legs,
Cradle his coffee mug
In ink-splattered hands that had been cramped, writing,
Ten minutes ago.
Coffee turned into sandwiches,
And soon, lunch break was over.

Back to the desk.
Lauren took off her sweater
After the walk from lunch.
The day was warm and Evan understood.
She'd arch her back
And lithely extend her arms
Over the drafts splayed luxuriously across her desk.
Time stops.
And soon, the afternoon is gone.

Leaving.
Blinking, Evan joins Lauren and David
Towards the elevator.
Lauren's brown eyes catch his and she speaks,
Words, out of that perfect, quizzical mouth.
"Everything ok, Evan? David and I didn't bore you
With wedding talk, did we?"
He'd shake his head,
And shrug his shoulders,
Then relax when she believes him.
Weeks turned to months.
And soon, Lauren is gone.
