Betrayal tastes bitter in England

don't laugh at the title... (: it's not fb official.

The plane ride felt shorter than it was. The moment the wheels set foot on the ground, I was jarred awake by my sleepless companion. Strapped across my mid-section was a seat belt, possibly put there by my best friend Melissa, who stared at me then with expectant eyes. "Come on, Meg! Get up. We just touched down and I want you to look put together to see my family."
"Geez, Mel. You look like you could use some sleep." Beneath her sea-blue eyes were dark circles and her pale face was bleached more than usual. "Did you try and nap at all?" I asked.
"I can't sleep. I've been awake for hours, nervous." She sat back in her seat and sighed. "I know you've met my aunt and uncle, but you have no idea how strict my grandparents are."
"Relax," I say. "They can't be that bad!" She grimaced.
"OH, you'll see."
As we rode the down escalator to baggage claim, Melissa told me stories about family visits with her grandparents gone awry. I started to feel a little green.
At the bottom of the escalator, we hoisted our small bags up on our shoulders and strode to an elderly couple tapping their feet impatiently. "Finally!" the woman exclaimed. "We've been waiting for hours."
"Sorry, Grams. The flight was delayed." Melissa looked at her shoes and I followed in suit.
"Well, whatever. Let's get going." The grandparents walked briskly to the baggage area and began to sift through bags.
"What are they looking for?" I whispered quietly to Melissa. "Our bags aren't on that belt." She laughed slightly and walked quickly to the correct baggage belt to grab our suitcases.
"Don't tell them that! Just get your suitcase and walk over to them and pretend you found it in that one." I laughed.
"Okay, then."
Upon seeing us with suitcase and bags in tow, the two grandparents walked towards the exit. "So, Maggie. How was your flight?" The grandfather tilted his head at me as he spoke and I tried to keep my cool.
"Actually sir, my name is Megan. And the trip was nice, thanks for asking." He coughed a little at my response and turned back to face forward.
"Well, it's only polite to do so," he said. I looked quizzically at Melissa.
"It sure is, Gramps," she said.
"Megan, I hear you have become acquainted with Aunt Jane and Uncle Fred?" asked Grams.
"Yes, ma'am. They were in town one day while I was at Melissa's," I say.
"And I also hear you've met Jack, Tom, and Melanie? Melissa told me you took a particular liking to Jack, and he to you. Is that true?" She looked back at me and I felt myself blush at her question. "He is quite a handsome boy, if I may say so. Such extraordinary potential, he has." I looked at Melissa, baffled. I tried to think of a response, but found myself blubbering instead.
"Yes, Grams. She and Jack got along great last summer. Of course, they all only stayed in town for two weeks and Megan only hung out with Jack twice... so it wasn't like they were an 'item', or anything." Melissa looked proud of herself for explaining the truly 'complicated' matter of the relationship Jack and I had, but I felt my cheeks darken. I gave Melissa a pointed look and continued following Melissa to her grandparent's car.
"No worries, Megan. Whether or not you and Jack find yourself hopelessly in love again this summer, I will not interfere. Anyways, who needs romance to have a little fun in England, eh Melissa?" A small beep sounded as the car doors unlocked.

This is pretty bad. I wanted to write a short story about something... but it seems like it may end up a novel. (: I might have to start over. We'll see!
