Chapter 2 (RR)

Chapter 2 (RR)

A Chapter by Drowning with Stars

Rapuzel carefully secured her satchel between the many layers of skirts on her dress. Then she went to the window and took a deep breath. She'd been planning this for years, but she wasn't sure she could bring herself to do it now. It was the only way down: she'd have to tie her hair to something, let it hang out the window and climb down it, then use her knife to cut it when she got to the bottom and leave it behind. It was a part of her though, her trademark. She began slowly, deliberately tying the ends of her hair, lock by lock, to the stong leg of the chair that her mother had died in just yesterday. But before she'd finished tying even the first peice, she heard a branch snap outside, down below. It wasn't as though the forest was ever silent, of course there were birds and deer and rabbits and such, but it had been far too loud to be a deer. Something much heavier must be down there. A bear? Rapunzel got to her feet and looked out the window, then quickly stepped back out of view, gasping. It couldn't be! Perhaps she was more shocked by her mother's death than she realized and was hallucinating?
Making sure the shadows still concealed her, she stepped forward a bit so that she could see out. Yes, someone was there. The first thing she noticed was his regal clothing that clearly announced his high status, and she immediately panicked. After a moment, though, she realized he couldn't be here to arrest her. No one at the palace would care enough about her to have been looking for her, especially not this far away, and anyway, the colors of his sword's sheath and his shield were the colors of the flag of this kingdom, not her own. Having consoled herself with these details, she started to wonder why he was here. Hunting perhaps? But they never came this far into the forest; if they did, she wouldn't have ever been living here. Besides, he was alone, he'd been looking at her tower for quite a while now. Why just her tower? It wasn't any more awesome than any of the other old buildings in the ruins, even if it was the highest, even if it was the only thing that was still relatively in one piece. Many of the other remains of the ruins were much prettier, much more interesting. She'd been too scared to look at them when she first came here, but she'd studied them many times from her window. Surely they were even better up close. But this man was only interested in her tower. Could he somehow know that she was here? She watched as he slid off his horse, and went to stand beneath her window. Then she heard his hesitant call, "Rapunzel? Rapunzel, let down your hair," and her eyes widened.

About
What I love about poetry is that it's completely personal. Not only to the writer, but the same poem also means something a little different to every single reader, the same way a song is different to.. more..
