A quirky love story

"

This was the very first time Elina had gone out drinking with her friends.

Oh sure, she had drunk plenty of alcohol before, but usually it was in solitude. She had never felt the need to go out with the girls, looking for boys and sex and trouble. So when she was invited to go for a girls’ night out the following weekend for her friend Lizzy’s 23rd birthday, she obliged, but only because it was Lizzy’s birthday (of course, she had gotten a call from her mother the previous night, a call full of worry and “why aren’t you going out with friends” and “you’re young, go out and have some fun” and “I’m expecting you to bring a boy home by this Christmas, I swear to God, Elina, I want some f*****g grandchildren d****t” too).

The doorbell rang at 9 pm, and she opened it to find Lizzy, and a loud group of girls behind her, bubbling and buzzing over with excitement and squeals of delight. And the high chatter quickly turned into hysterical laughter, as they looked over and groaned at the outfit Elina was wearing; a long, flowing, brilliantly colored blue skirt with wildflowers embroidered at the end (a beautiful gift her grandmother had made for her) and a thick black tank top. She was wearing no makeup and had left her wavy (and a bit frizzy) shoulder length hair down. They went into her closet, trying to find any article of clothing that might resemble their own skimpy, tight, leather ensembles, but the only thing they deemed acceptable was an old, dusty pair of high heels Elina’s mother had made her wear for her high school graduation. So they ran to the nearest department store and bought a revealing piece for her; black, strangling, and pushing in all the things needed to be pushed in and pushing up all the things Elina really did not want pushed up. She wore it because they bought it for her. And when Lizzy finally told them after an hour to  “get in the f*****g car, or I’m f*****g leaving and celebrating my own f*****g birthday by myself” and they giggled and hugged her and ran to the cheap vehicle. Elina, slightly flustered by all the attention she had just received, followed.

They arrived at the nightclub (it was outdoors, fully adorned with fireworks and a live band and celebrity stars). The girls linked each others arm in their own, giggling as they headed to the dance floor. But Elina hesitated; it looked claustrophobic and sexual. Lizzy, being her best friend, read her thoughts and reassured her that it was supposed to be that way. That it was fun. And Elina just shrugged, and asked if she would sit at the bar with her for a little while. Lizzy rolled her eyes and agreed. And they sat there, in silence, waiting for someone or something magnificent or slightly interesting to happen. It was only after half an hour that a young attractive man approached them and started to talk with them; Lizzy’s friends, tipsy and panting from all the dance, joined soon after.  It was discovered that his name was Abe, and yes, he played the drums for the live band that had performed tonight, and yes, he was indeed single. One of Lizzy’s friends remarked flirtatiously, flipping her wavy blond hair over her shoulder, “Have you seen all the stars here?”

At this point, Elina had not chimed in for most of the conversation. Abe did not seem interested in her, and Elina was not interested in him. She was surprised when a slow song came on and he asked her to dance, looking into her eyes and not into the tiny outfit she was forced to wear. She asked him as they came closer together, his hands on the small of her back and hers on his shoulders, “Why me?”

He chuckled and then looked at her face with profound genuinity,

“Because when that girl asked if we had seen all the stars, you were the only f*****g one who looked up at the sky.”

Sorry that this story sucks, give me some feedback, what do you like, what should I change, etc, etc, etc. It hasn't been revised many times, which might explain the sucky-ness level?
