Mornings Gone

I mourn

The mornings gone,

Waking to the cold,

Bare feet on hardwood,

Firing the furnace,

The smell of strong coffee,

Two cups placed,

Climbing back into warmth

Beneath the Pendletons.

I mourn

The mornings gone,

Lazy hours abed

For a family of four,

In winter coats

Jake, Shady

Upon our lap and leg.

I mourn

The mornings gone.

I would read her

Fascinating finds in

Scientific American,

Smithsonian.

She would pretend

To listen.

In return I would

Refill her cup.

I mourn

The mornings gone.

Is not love

Two cats, a man,

A woman,

Content together as

One,

Content to hold

The day at bay,

Content to just be.

Holding the day at bay with the ones you love, your most significant intimate unit; in any season or circumstance- those are golden times… 🙏🏻🕊

I think you just broke my heart...unintentionally, of course. My, my, where do I begin. Verse after verse I was mesmerized, swept away in the undertow of emotion that increased as I slowly scrolled down the page. But what really made this hard hitting for me was the repetition of the opening lines of all four stanzas. It kept me focused on the pain, on the reality of what this does to a person actually going through it. The detail was clear, concise and brilliant. The mention of the littlest things - waking up to the cold and firing the furnace, strong coffee for two, and being content to be a family, which is all we ever wanted out of life. A most wonderful read it was, Michael. And I forgive you for breaking my heart!

The last verse is quite touching. We tend to take the good for granted, only appreciating it when it is gone.

I probably noticed the last verse because my wife and I, both elderly, have two aging cats.
Your memories are very vivid, vibrant images… you mourn is repeated which gives strength to this piece…. Obviously the mornings were times for reflection, cozying up to each other and with the rest of the family…. You mourn, the mornings are gone, those warm times of relaxation…… and the details you clearly speak of; a wonderful poem of deep recollections…
Thank you for sharing🌷🌷
