PATRICIAA Poem by Michael Sun BearA song of Love before a fated song of LossA few years ago, my life having taken an extremely painful unexpected turn, I found myself alone and lonely. I tried internet dating. Late one night, unable to sleep, I flipped through profile photos of women that had been up on the site for quite some time. Suddenly a photo seized my attention. Instead of the typical head shot that more often than not had been taken ten years earlier, this woman stood casually alert in her home, as if someone had rounded a hallway corner, said Hey Patricia, and snapped a photo. Her photo in some subtle way strongly spoke to me. Even though she lived two states away, I said to myself write her; if nothing else my note would give her a gift of flattery. To my surprise, an intense long distance relationship blossomed, after many, many weeks we arranged a rendezvous, and an intense, joyful relationship was sustained up close. She was the woman of my dreams, truly, truly. I never thought I would meet such a woman. I loved her eyes, her hair, her lithe tall form, her wit and intelligence, her talk of books. We could cuddle after intimacy and talk late into the night. This poem describes the start of our story. You have guessed the end of the story, haven’t you? Ultimately this woman broke my heart, absolutely shattered it. I gravely injured myself by daring to dream I could keep this woman in my life. This poem is not great writing, but it raises that universal question: Is it better to have loved and lost…….? My answer is absolutely not! PATRICIA It was a mere whisper, a hint of blue eyes and hair so soft, a photo for all the world to see, yet it spoke to me. Oh how it spoke to me! It was a mere whisper, this woman, this Patricia, a mere whisper now a storm raging in my heart. Dare I dream of safe harbor? Can you see us? Yes there, hand in hand, we smile, we wave, we wish one and all safe passage to a future filled with love, as we have found our own.
