I'm Sorry That Today Is All That's Left

I want to apologize for being so afraid,

But I’ve learned to fear emotions from mistakes that I have made,

Now I see I’ve wasted all this time just hiding from my heart,

I’m responsible for all the pain that’s been keeping us apart,

And now that you are leaving there’s no time for me to change,

But when your hand is near mine, it makes me feel so strange,

So I’ll hold you now, I’ll take this chance,

I’ll grab your hand for one last dance,

I promise that we’ll make it last, today.

Even if it’s for a moment, I want to be with you,

I don’t want to wonder if what we could’ve had was true,

So I’ll hold you close, caress your hair,

Doesn’t matter if we’re anywhere,

Just as long as I’m with you I swear,

We can make it count, today.

You transmitted the emotion well.

One thought... Part of your Author's Note could actually be part of the poem... and not in an Author's note.
This poem doesn't need an explanation. The reader should be allowed to discover what the poem is without being told. Let it stand on its own merits. I think you will find most all will.
Unless there is something technical, or very vague that needs an explanation, let the reader unravel the mystery of the poem.

I think you are absolutely right about letting the poem tell the whole story rather than using an Author's note. I'm working on integrating some of the note into the poem now. :)
