Waves

Waves

A Poem by Matthew Clough

“Have you ever been in love?”

“Once, a while ago.”

“What was that like?”

“Like gliding through the sea.”

“Do you know how to swim?”

“I didn’t have to. She kept me afloat.”

“So where is she now?”

“Somewhere in another ocean.”

“Why’d she leave?”

“Something about the water being too cold.”

“So where does that leave you?”
“Drowning, I guess.”

“You should’ve learned how to swim.”

“I never thought I’d leave the shore.”
