PromisesA Poem by Matthew CloughWhen
I fell asleep next to you, promising
to write you a poem about the stars, I
did not realize that the only things that
might come to mind when I did sit down to
write such a piece would be the gaps between
those little shining lights, rifts
in the fabric of a bright white blanket.
I
can’t say why I was drawn to the darkness, especially
with you there beside me, or
why I might chance to blink while
a shooting star blazed across the sky, only
opening my eyes to see bright blank
pools in the basins of your cheeks. Perhaps
it was selfishness that kept me blinded from
the constellations, and perhaps that
is why when I woke next to you the
following morning, after the stars had faded and
the sun was breaking through leafy canopy, I
could see only the shadows sprawled across your
young and delicate face, a mind still lost in
dreams of twinkling, boundless space. © 2014 Matthew CloughFeatured Review
