Amicus Est.

Amicus Est.

A Poem by Ben McKeon
"

I owe a lot more than words can say.

"

I was a liar.

Instead of breaking bread, I broke bones.

All in pursuit of a religion in the eyes of which I would never be Holy.

I would pay for my sins, but it would take much longer than being washed clean with

Iodine-131 to admit that I was truly sick.

My mind rejected what my body cried out for.

It was only a want, my need was to float, on scales and water alike.

I dragged an anchor of worry like a bungee under the boat,

Throwing up a wave of turmoil. Ribs and riggers will crack all the same.

But mind, metal and musculature can all be mended by sparks or by speaking.

All of this a costly fault, but with it a valuable lesson:

Advice and free speed come best from Athlone.
