I Have Fallen in Love with Late Summer Afternoons

I Have Fallen in Love with Late Summer Afternoons

A Poem by The Scholar
"

"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today Tomorrow will be dying." -Robert Herrick “To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time"

"

I have fallen in love with late summer afternoons --

I cannot deny.

With clear blue skies, and golden sunsets

To watch all alone from my bedroom window,

With the quiet breeze and the rustle of leaves

And drifting gossamer catching a moment's sun,

And the passers-by with their dogs every day

Walking under my window -- and whistling --

With the songbirds that sing from a tree I can’t see

And the laughter of children from somewhere below me,

And the distant roar of cars -- speeding out there --

On the freeway -- in a hurry to be in some place at some time --

I don’t know where.

But they gather their rosebuds not -- and miss what they may --

Yet perhaps they will find it some day -- O’ life,

Before it is too late, and the flower is dying.

But you see, I -- I have fallen in love with late summer afternoons,

-- and they with me.

I know more elaborate words could have been used, but I simply wanted to say something simple.

Lovely poem.

I think you did a fine job on this. You've painted a perfect scene with your words from the title to the last word. I don't think you need more elaborate words for this. The picture is perfect with the poem and gives a guide to your thoughts.

Great poem

As with all poetry, it is meant to be read aloud and so I did. I loved hearing the words coming from my voice. There is a softness to this poem, something that lingers and shifts from my tongue to the air, then sifts away.

So much of this is about the ordinary, within which you have found the extraordinary. Very nice poem indeed!

Stunning.... I have fallen in love with them too. This was a perfect read, very day in the life, and I liked it very much!

No elaborate words were needed here, my friend. The feeling of isolation the subject is experiencing, as the beauty of the world goes by him day by painstaking day...this was wonderful!

Perfectly described. Elaborate is not always better. This is wonderful, as is.

I really love the ending of your poem. I love the imagery and I too can picture those beloved summer afternoons that I'm looking forward to.

You have made me fallen in love through your imagery too, with the vision you share.
Thank you for this. O'life, indeed.... as it shall embrace all what has a good karma, Thank you my friend!
