Grand Plans

Grand Plans

A Poem by Michelle Chiafala
"

I see the paradise we had forged.

"

(my knight)

Traveling the world over, together,
because you knew how I was frightened
of planes and empty hotel rooms.
"I want to keep you safe," you said.
Those words have never left me.

(our palace)

The house we built from the ground up,
some place off the map;
say, thousands of miles away,
where no one could ever find us.
How you had blushed
the shade of strawberry red
when I told you of my plan
to make love in every room.

(conflict + resolution)

We would fight over silly things,
like the antique cake platter
that was passed on to you
from your grandmother.
Or of the flowers in the dining room.
Our disputes would be settled,
and one would say quite easily,
only requiring a single kiss.

(the bloodline)

Our children would know,
then our grandchildren next,
the tale of how we came to be.
I had a vision of our daughter
wearing my wedding dress.
She was so pale and lovely,
with your hazel eyes.
My heart burst inside of my chest.

(disagreeable reality)

Living so simply, yet so beautifully
would have been enough.
I see the paradise we had forged
behind my closed eyelids.

(solace)

Do you?
