Because I am safeA Poem by Madeline Capo
Nothing really matters,
because I am safe. I can lay down in the grass, and crank my neck towards the blazing sun. I can think about my dreams and make new ones. I can simply dream. I can search for a song to match my mood, an extra dopamine hit on an already gorgeous day that had a previous forecast for rain. There are so many opportunities to feel joy. And I do, all the time. A perfectly made latte. Freshly baked cookies on pink printed napkins. Friends I love and ones I just made. We drink and spill everything and order it all again. Laughter erupts across the table like thunder. Because we are happy. Because we are safe. I'd rip the heart out of my chest and hand it to you in a single breath if it meant you'd be able to take your little girl to school and pick her up at five. Sit with your friends over cold drinks like me and talk about your days as you watch her play. All the time thinking: this is normal. Because I am safe.
