My giftA Poem by Madeline Capo
I have been waiting for so long to get these
words on a page Don't ask me why Perhaps I was afraid Of how they would look looking up at me That their beauty would crush me Because sometimes the same things that are the most beautiful elicit emotions so strong only tears can respond You know the expression, I'm sure: I'm not crying from sadness I'm crying from joy Joy because you have come at no better time Walking into my story like the most long-awaited answered prayer the ache of the heart's deepest groan-filled desire A story where the pages were tethered and worn, falling not from being cherished but from being adored by the wrong person It's funny how one day can change the course of a lifetime how it can bring you someone whose existence you did not know could have never percieved dreamed screamed to God enough for or believed it would ever really come And yet Doors move Trains stall Mom calls Heads bury into mobile phones Friends chit chat Wifi fails People walk too briskly Don't you see? Milliseconds made the difference Time curled and rattled and shook itself to the bone To drop us in the same place Two strangers with sand beneath their toes walking alone Unknowingly needing the other to reach home A gift is something I have never quite understood Being spoiled without working or earning it I always feel undeserving But blessings can't be predicted Like rainbows don't ask the rain for permission Gifts are simply given So No word I can write Sing Recite Read Whisper Type or Yell Will ever be able to adequately tell those first feelings of falling Like a stomach drop that doesn't stop A happiness you can feel in your inner most parts A happiness that no dimple-covered grin, touch, or "I love you" could ever bring justice to Let's call it Elation Elation wrapped in a humble red ribbon treat The grandiose of gifts, disguised as a simple Sunday at the beach
