Chapter 2

Chapter 2

A Chapter by Mazie Tackett

Someone screamed. It didn’t sound like me, but it was. I shut my mouth, and the world silenced completely, all but the air rushing past me. Then suddenly the rushing air stopped. I had stopped. Why did I stop moving? I thought. Not too long after that thought I felt my arm being jerked upward. Someone had grabbed me as I was falling. I know that hand. I know that rough texture, cuts and scars, large and naturally tough hand. DAD!! I looked up. It’s his twin. IT’S HIS TWIN! I thought. I struggled to break free of the hand, but it held strong. All I had done was prevent him from pulling me into the building. It didn’t feel like I was going to get away, but as I continued to squirm, he began to sweat. His shaggy, brown hair was stuck to his forehead. Sweat dribbled from his head only to fall upon his hand. Soon, enough sweat had gathered, and I began slipping. He tried to readjust his hand to keep me from falling, but that only resulted in me slipping futher. He was now holding me by just the tops of my fingers. Drop! Drop! The sweat fell fast now. Then suddenly, I dropped. I was free-falling once again, wind whipped past me. Every second I was inching closer and closer to ground. Involuntarily, I reached out my hand and grabbed a ledge. When I came back to my senses, I realized my feet almost touched the ground. The problem was, though, when I let go of the ledge and dropped to ground, I remembered I had no idea where I was or where I could go.

I looked around, taking in my surroundings. This place really did look like a hospital. The place even had a parking lot. Outside of the parking lot was a different story though. Outside was a desert, nothing more, nothing less. There were six cars in the parking lot, and three people running towards me with guns. GUNS!! I shouted in my head. I broke into a sprint, running in the opposite direction. The edge of the building was coming up which a corner. A corner meant new surroundings, other people could be ready to amush me when i turned, but if I stay I would be killed or taken back. So I continued to run forward, then turned the corner. I was stunned. This was nothing like the other side, forest stretched out as far as the eye could see. If I can just get to the trees, I could hide. I thought. I almost felt relief, but just then I saw something fly past me. I knew it was stupid, but I ran to where it landed to see what they had shot. It was a tranquilizer dart. They are trying to shoot me with tranqilizer guns! What the fudgemonk- The thought was cut off as I ran head first into a tree. I bounced off and fell flat on my bottom. That’s gonna leave a mark. I made it. I made it! Wait... Now what? I thought to myself. My legs were tired from running so much and so fast, my feet were sore, raw, and bloody from running all over barefooted, and i was starving. It was obvious I need time to recuperate, but I pushed myself forward. I ran and ran. After about an hour passed I stopped. I was hopelessly lost. There was no way out of this forest.

CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH! Someone was coming! I grabbed the nearest branch, and pulled myself up. I climbed as quietly and as high as I could before woman came into view. She looked frantic, like she was running from someone. I wasn’t an idiot, I knew it was a trick. She kept looking directly at my tree way too much. Then there was the little problem with the name tag on her shirt that said nurse Hunt. I couldn’t believe these people were that stupid. She ran directly over to my tree and started to climb it. She was only slightly bigger than me, so I knew the tree could hold her. When I brought my hand to my face to wipe away some sweat, I saw something that made me want to scream. My hand blended in with the tree. I looked down at myself. My whole body looked like the tree. OH MY GOD!! I’m turning into a freaking chameleon! I was about to scream whean the nurse reached my branch. I froze. She can’t see me! She can’t see me! I’m a stupid chameleon! Please! Please, don’t see me! I thought. I was suprised to see her pass me up. I blew out a breath I hadn’t realized i was holding in. Hunt apparently heard me, turned around, and she was climbing back down, looking right at me. I had to be going crazy at this time because just then a squirrel came up to me and TALKED!!

“Go! Quick! We’ll take care of her.” The squirrel said. Then out of no where, ten squirrels jump out and attack the nurse. Could this get any weirder. I thought

“I’m dreaming, right?” I asked the squirrel. And now I’m talking to the squirrel. I’ve gone nuts! Completely bonkers! I aknowledged.

“Shut up and get moving.” The squirrel screech. Freaked out, I scrambled down the tree. Then I did the only other thing I could do, I ran. My long, brown was blowing every which way. If I could see myself I knew my dark, brown eyes would be large and frantic with a few dried tears along the edges. I’m a big girl, I had to be. My father was never really around, and when he was he never had time for me. So I basically raised myself. I was so deep in thought I almost didn’t see the that was to the side of me, but it was kinda hard to miss considering were three guards the size of skyscrapers. I skidded to a stop. My brain screamed “You’re going to die! You have no where to hide” I calmed my breathing. When I got to thinking straight I remembered I’m in a forest, plenty of hiding places. I sprinted to the nearest trees. The only problem with that was, I was in a forest, every move I made echoed as if it wasn’t already loud enough. As I was running I stepped on a stick and broke it. The sound echoed throughout the forest. The big guard-people’s heads snapped up. And I did what every stupid girl in the horror movies do, I screamed. Then I don’t know how, but the guards heard me scream. Then for some odd reason the guards ran towards me. (Don’t you just love sarcasm.) I guess my brain was unplugged because I just stood there, watching them get closer and closer to me. I knew I would never make fun of another girl in a horror movie again. When the guards were about five feet away was when my body finally decided to run. Of course I wasn’t fast enough, and ended up being dragged back to the hospital/torture place kicking, screaming, clawing, biting, and anything else I could think of that would hurt them. Finally, they got tired of me. One threw me down on the ground and it wasn’t gentle either. Then one step me with one foot to hold me down, while the last one grabbed a needle. I struggled more and more to get away from that needle, my energy renewed for now. The first guy had to help the other guard hold me down. They gave me the shot, and I blacked out. I woke up in a

padded room, and I was in my very own-wait for it-hug me jackets(straight jacket. Plus handcuffs. I start banging on the walls and screaming.

“Let me out! I want answers! Why am i here? Why do you want my dad? How did get here in the first place? Answer me! Answer me! Now or I’ll...I’ll...oh just let me out!” I screamed, now banging on the door. I didn’t expect it to open so when it did I fell flat on my face, above me stood dad’s twin. “Why do you keep popping up everywhere? Do you have access to the whole building? I would think the owner would be the only one who could do that.” He waited patiently as I figured it all out. “You own this place!”

“Yes, I do. My name’s not dad’s twin, it’s Erik. I’m a mind reader thats how I know you call me that. Now get off the ground.”

“I can’t! My arms are stuck.” I retorted.

“Excuses!” He grabbed a pair scissors and cut the jacket off. “Now get up.

I pushed myself off the floor. Annoyed, I broke the cuffs right off.

“So it’s true. You are special.” He mumbled to himself.

“I want answers now!” I stated.

“Ask away,” he said.

“How did you get me the first time?”

“Your astral projection.”

“My what?”

“When you were asleep at home part of your soul projected into our forests because of a spell we used. We captured your astral projection and the cord connect the two of you led us to you.” He explained.

“Okay. I understood only half of that. Why am I here?”

“To help us find your father.”

“Why do you want dad?”

He sighed. He paced around the room for a while. When he stopped he had a really creepy smile on his face. “We’re different Lilly. We’re not normal people. We are paranormal people. We have powers, but thats not the only thing that sets us apart from the normals. Did you know every paranormal is born a twin? The twin just doesn’t live long enough for human doctors to even know it was there. Only once did both twin survive. That was me and your father. Cells of the other child will come out with the live baby. We experimented on those cells. We, me and your father Derek, found out we can make them grow and live like a real person. We also found we can control them.” I gagged. “Derek is the only one that knows how to complete the process, though. He never told anyone else. He knows how to return their powers to them. So you see we need Derek’s help, but we need you because he quit sixteen years ago. He said ‘it’s wrong to make to zombie army’ as he put it.”

“So you expect me to help you after all of this? How stupid do you think I am?”

“I don’t think you’re stupid. No, you’re your mother’s child.”

I gasped. “You knew my mother?”

“Yes. She was a very bright woman. She was beautiful too. Her glossy, black hair was so silky and soft. Her dark, brown eyes made all the men crazy. She had long legs that stretched on forever. She was very light weight. Her voice mesmerized everyone. She was a sweet tender woman.Depsite all that she chose to be a geek. She held back from the popular crowd. Oh, she could fight too. Boy, could she fight, but the only time she would fight is for the outcasts. She was the model human, although she wasn’t normal, she was paranormal. She could freeze anything, even time.” I hung onto every word. Dad never told me about my mom and i never knew her. Dad told me she died, but he wouldn’t tell me how. He never remarried, actually he never married in the first place, but he never dated. I wanted to know all I could about her. I focused completely on him. “She was advanced in everything. I fell in love with her. I would send roses day after day, write love notes in class and send them to her. I would sit with her at lunch, but she wasn’t interested.” He had a far away look in his eye. He was reliving the past. He probably didn’t even know I was still here. He continued on without a pause. “She threw away all my roses in the trash, crumpled all my notes, and ignored me completely. She liked Derek.” He said bitterly. “Derek, the smart one! Derek, the good boy! They started dating. I got so mad, but I continued to send the roses and notes, walked with her to class sat at lunch with her when I could find a seat. She continued to ignore me. One day when Derek was gone, I kissed her. She punched me in the face. I had left the populars, studied hard and become a nerd for her, but she wanted Derek. Not long after she had a baby, little Lilly Tymes. Even her child was perfect.

I blushed. “That’s me!” I piped excitedly.

He shook his head as if to clear it. “Oh, yes! That was you. She never left your side. Too bad she didn’t live long enough to see you now. Such a shame she had to die.”

“Did my mother die in a car crash. That’s what I think happened.” I asked.

“Oh, Lilly! Sweet, Innocent Lilly! Your daddy didn’t tell you, did he?”

“Tell me what?”

He chuckled. “Did he even tell you about me?”

“No. Tell me what!”

“Oh dear! My My My!”

“TELL ME WHAT?!” I screeched.

He laughed. “ I killed your mother.”
