“Rest easy Gretel…” I start to tell her… she responds with cries
She doesn’t need words because every thought drips from her eyes
’It’s all lies…’
Oh Gretel… She’s always been my rational side
Don’t you know she loves us ?
You’re still to young to see that her love is blind
She only sends us out into the woods to test our ties
She wants to know we’ll always come back to the same bedside
That’s why dear Gretel I have left these little white stones
So that even in the darkness of night we can still find our way back home
Gretel, don’t you know how hard it’s for her with her failing sight
We aren’t the easiest to get along with all those nights
The times when don’t come home because we’re busy with our own fight
Or when she just wants to sleep and we won’t turn off those lights
But I still know she loves us because she hugs us so tight
And for that love " I know we’ll make it all right
Just stay close with me Gretel and don’t be consumed by your fright
For love to prevail you always have to fight
That’s why dear Gretel I left all these breadcrumbs sown
So that when the morning comes again we can still find our way back home
‘But Hansel’, she cries… that’s what I’m constantly being told
Haven’t you realized I’m not younger but just as old?
You always find your way back and tell her she’s pure as gold
But at the slightest disagreement she just says “I have to let you go”
I’m sick of all those nights her insecurities make the two of us unfold
And then you run back calm her in your arms till her breathing is controlled
When are you going to see that she more ready seeing us go
Then comprising because she thinks she’s being controlled?
We both know what we’ll find the deeper in the woods we go
Candy coated homes and people inside that will take advantage of your soul
Fatten you up with lies and then devour everything you know
At each step they try to get you lost in the darkness of the flow
Always making sweeter promises they know they can’t bestow
But at least you know that’s what you are getting when those winds blow
It won’t be like this blanketed love then shove into a night naked and cold…
That’s why dear Gretel tonight… I left no trail back in this wilderness through which we roam
I don’t know if we will make it out here alone but it’ll take more than breadcrumbs to find our way home
