SacrificeA Poem by EmeraldThis is a poem about nature and the felling of trees.Redwood forest in the rain, by the river running wild and free. Blanket of pine on soft mossy
earth. The fallen tree, alone in the
clearing, slain. Letting the sunlight stream in while its neighbours huddle and whisper beneath the crisp
silence of expectation, punctuated by the alarm of birdsong. Who is the daring woodsman that chopped it down - let its crown crash to the ground, humbled. Insects slither and creep under the soft bark, Making a home in the deep dark, even though the branches were grey, withered and wasting shadows of their former selves. Soon to be scarified To the fire. Smoke carried on the wind, Signals the end But others will survive and thrive. The flourishing forest, renewed, casualties forgotten. Except for the trees. They shiver occasionally, with a deep-rooted sense of unease. © 2014 Emerald |
