The Wait

The Wait

A Story by Maya Fadly
"

What is it called? When you could be happy everytime you see her. Even if you could not touch her, you are still happy. Is this love? Then I will be waiting for your love.

"
The first day of autumn in London was beautiful. The leaves of the trees were yellow and orange. That morning was quite chilly and the wind was blowing hard. Just a few people walked by or jogged around Kensington Park that morning. But this man was always there every Saturday and Sunday morning. Sitting on a bench in Kensington Park. Alone. Sometimes he brought newspaper with him. He was around forty-year old with glassses and nice suit. He would just sit on the bench and watched people walked by. Wrong. More than that. He waited for someone. Someone that he loved. Loved at the first sight.
Sharina Chakravarty, 15 years old. Indian girl who had been living in London since she was born. She always jogged every Saturday and Sunday morning, along with her Terrier. Sometimes she would jog with her father, her friends, or her boyfriend. But that day, it was only Sharina and her dog.
The old man was just sitting there and watched her passed by. He was smiling through the morning. He observed her. Her healthy brown skin looked very beautfiul under the sun. Her pretty black hair was shinning. And her beautiful brown eyes always dazzled the old man. He really loved her voice when she laughed. Her voice was so clear as the oasis. His heart throbbed as the girl looked to his way. He tried to read the newspaper that he brought, but it was useless. He was fascinated by her. Everyone could see how happy he was on that moment.
A week had past, the old man was waiting for the Indian girl again on that morning. He waited solemnly. And then he could hear Sharina's voice was getting near to him. He was a little bit shocked to see that the girl showed up with her boyfriend. You could see an emotion in the old man's eyes. Jealousy.
Something happened to the young couple. They started to argue. The old man was smirking, he felt a little happiness. He wished to see them broke up. But Sharina's boyfriend realized that the old man was watching them having a fight. So he yelled at him rudely. The old man was embarrassed and looked to the other way. But then he could hear the couple was still fighting over something. His face turned brighter. He smiled so wide and he almost laughed when he knew that the couple were breaking up.
Three weeks had past, it was already Saturday. But the old man had not seen Sharina since she had a fight with her boyfriend. The old man sat on his favorite spot, waiting for his love in despair. He was wondering why was she not coming? Did she know that the old man was always watching her? Without opening the sheets of his newspaper that he brought, the old man stood from his seat and walked away with hollow heart.
The next Saturday morning was bright and you could hear the birds were chriping, and the old man was still waiting on his favorite spot. He opened sheet to sheet of his newspaper. Sometimes he would look around the park, just in case if the girl showed up with her dog. He had waited for three hours, but Sharina had not showed up. The old man was very sad. He closed his newspaper and about to go but then the girl of his dreams sat next to him. His heart was exploding inside his chest. He was afraid that Sharina could hear his heart beat.
Sharina was very pretty as usual. But she came with a pair of crutches. Her left leg was wrapped with gypsum bandage. The old man was shocked and he didn't even realize that the girl was staring at him. Once their eyes met, the old man plucked up his courage. He greeted her. But the girl only nodded and smiled.

He tried to do better than just greet her. So he tried to open a conversation. But he stuttered a lot. He asked about Sharina's left leg. Sharina smiled a bit and told him that she fell while practicing cheer at her school. They were silent for some minutes until Sharina spoke to him. She told the old man that she often sees him in the park. And she asked him what was he doing.

The old man smiled. He chuckled in nervousness a couple times. He finally answered after he could clear hi mind.

"I'm waiting for you..." he said.

Sharina was shocked. But the old man kept on confessing his heart. He mentioned his dreams where he could hold her hands, touch her hair, and kiss her eyes. He was happily confessing his love to her. His blue eyes were sparkling whenever he told her about his feelings. He was lovesick. He was in his own world.

Then Sharina stopped him. She couldn't believe of what she just heard. She was disgusted. She tried to get up but then the old man prevented her. He apologized to her. But Sharina was scared of him and tried to get away from him. And she did. She ran away uncontrollably.

HIs heart was broken. His love just went away without even looked back at him. Went away and never came back although the old man waited for her on the next Saturday morning or on the next Sunday morning.

This was very nice. I like that there were details, enough for me to crate a picture in my mind, but maybe you can develop them further so that the reader gets a more vivid picture to imagine. Maybe you did so because you didn't want the story to drawl on and get boring. Overall, this was a very nice read. Looking forward to reading more of your stories
